AUS Opti sailors make final preparations for the 2018 Gill OptiAUS Championships

Its that time of the year again  … AUS Opti sailors are madly training, fine tuning their skills and checking their boats & equipment before packing up to head to the 2018 Gill OptiAUS Championships.  The event being held this year in Queensland at the Royal Qld Yacht Squadron on Moreton Bay starting with Teams racing on 3rd January 2018.

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is no stranger to large regatta championships, but this …is the biggest Summer of Sailing ever.  This year’s Opti Championships will be one of the 14 Australian National Championships held back to back over the December17 and January18 period.   The RQYS staff and volunteer base are ready for a big two months of sailing action!

The 2018 Gill OptiAUS Championship event is the selection regatta that identifies over 40 of the top sailors that will form the Australian Optimist Sailing Teams and Development Squad that will represent Australia at IODA and regional events in 2018.

The event is about all levels of Opti sailing and new sailors to the class entering Green fleet will be coached each day of the event.  Priority will be placed on boat handling skills and most of all, providing a positive holiday regatta experience that is safe and fun.    The event allows younger and less experienced sailors the opportunity to experience and participate in a big Regatta event.   There will be time spent learning each day with some fun to be had on and off the water with games planned by the RQ Green Fleet coaching team.

OptiAUS, encourages International sailors to participate in the event and to date 16 sailors from 6 countries are registered to join in.  AUS sailors are looking forward to welcoming competitors from USA, Thailand, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Peru and Fiji.

Being part of this event, both on and off the water, is what memories are made of .
