2018 Gill OptiAUS Championships will shortly be underway ...

The Optimist class is the largest class in Australia  and the annual National regatta - the 2018 Gill OptiAUS Championships - will shortly be underway at the host club  the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron,  Manly between 2nd-10th January 2018.

This event is the largest single class regatta in Australia, this year attracting 257 sailors from every State in Australia and 14 visiting International sailors from 6 countries.

Families around Australia have been planning for this event for some time -  the National Opti Championships family community spikes the tourism numbers to the local area of the event  - the region benefitting by an increased tourism spend of over $2m just from this event.

All Opti sailors look forward to fun and excitement of Teams racing - which kicks off the regatta on Wednesday 3 January  when 24 teams will put their skills to the test for podium prizes presented at the Opening Ceremony at 4pm.    The fleet racing begins on Friday 5th January when Moreton Bay will be the stage for 257 sailors competing in 3 fleets - vying for the top prizes and looking to qualify for the 40+ positions on Australian Optimist representatives teams that will compete in continental and regional championships.

The sailors just starting out in the class compete in the Green fleet which has its own special programme of events that are all about having fun .. plus some racing, skills development, games and .. more fun.

The AIODA Committee thank Gill Australia for their continued sponsorship of the class and the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for working with the organising committee to produce a fantastic event.
