Andrew Dempsey is 14yrs old and started sailing at the South of Perth YC within weeks of emigrating from UK. Learning to sail allowed Andrew to make sailing friends before starting Yr9 at his new school. Having swapped the Thames for the Swan River & the Indian Ocean - Andrew is on water in summer 6 days a week either sailing or rowing, his second passion. When on dry land he usually has his head in a Kindle - his third passion.
Ben Hinks is a Yr7 student who sails from Adelaide Sailing Club. A sailing highlight has been being part of the winning team of the 2017 Optimist Nationals Teams Racing at the 2017 Nationals in South Australia. Ben's other hobbies are soccer, cycling and flying his drone - but sailing is something he is crazy about and he'd love to represent Australia at the Olympics in a Laser Full rig. Ben is one of the 10 AOST team members heading to Hong Kong for the 2017 Asian & Oceanian Championships. Good luck Ben !
Bella Green is in Yr 8 and sails from Royal Prince Alfred YC in Sydney. Sailing highlightrs have been competing at ISAF Sail Melbourne, Sail Country Victoria (really had fun & camping at the YC) and being coached by Nina Curtis as part of the RPAYC Youth Development program. Bella also enjoys windsurfing but has another sport she is crazy about .. skiing - her team are the current Australian Champions at Giant Slalom. Bella will be joining the other 9 team members heading to the 2017 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championships in Hong Kong next week - go for it Bella!
Toby Coote is a Yr 8 student who sails from the South of Perth YC. Toby is a speedster .... reaching in 35kts is his idea of a great day's sailing in his Opti, which is a change of scene to his other hobbies of music and mastering the Rubik's cube. A sailing highlight was competing with his WA team mates in the 2016 Singapore Nationals, Toby had a good regatta and enjoyed the cultural experience.
Harry Higgins is a Yr 7 student at St Peters Woodlands GS in South Australia and sails from Brighton & Seacliff YC whre he likes to hang out with his friends and sail with 3 generations of his family. Harry squeezes in football, bike riding and surfing but he is packing his bags soon to follow his passion of travelling & sailing - joining the other 9 AUS team heading to the 2017 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship in Hong Kong. Daniel Links is a Year 7 student who sails from Royal Prince Alfred YC and is one of the 10 AUS team members heading to the 2017 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championships later this month. Daniel has competed in a few overseas regattas but counts winning the 2017 New South Wales State Championship as a highlight to date. Daniel also enjoys playing music and thanks his parents for enabling him to combine sailing in regattas with travelling ... good one Daniel! Best of luck in Hong Kong.
Molly Alderson is one of those Opti kids that was just about born on a boat. Based out of "Freshie", Royal Freshwater Bay YC in Perth, Western Australia, Molly is in Year 7 and squeezes into her schedule hockey, soccer and basketball. Sailing highlights have been placing 1st Female at the 2016 ISAF World Cup in Melbourne and Most Improved Sailor at the 2017 Gill Australian and Open Optimist Championship. Jonas is from South Ausralia and one of the 10 AUS Opti Sailing Team heading to HKG for the 2017 Optimist Asian and Oceanian Championship. When Jonas isnt sailing .. he's playing footy and the Under14 Grand Final this Sunday is the only thing that could keep him from Day2 of the Spring Clinic Teams training with Australian Sailing SA HP Coach Alex Zimmermann. Spare time is spent with Penny the Boxer, skate boarding, surfing. Jonas has his sights set on sailing amongst the Olympic rings and an Americas Cup ... Finley Scade has worked hard at Woollahra Sailing Club to move through the Opti ranks to become a member of the NSW Sailing Team, next month joining the other 9 members of the 2017 AOST team heading to the 2017 IODA Asian & Oceanian Championship in Hong Kong. Finley is in Yr 9 at Cranbrook School, where he enjoyed being part of the tema that achieved 3rd place at the challenging 2017 School Teams Racing Championship and 13th at the 2017 New Zealand Nationals in Napier earlier this year. Introducing Sailor Cowan, a 7yr old Green fleeter from Largs Bay SC in SA. Sailor is in Year 2 at Largs Bay Primary where she’s a keen ball player competing in both soccer and football. This photo was taken during the SA Youths where Sailor competed on her boat Squirto. Sailor is aiming to be top 3 in Green Fleet and a big sailing highlight was beating big brother Murphy in a race. Hobbies include watching Utube and playing with friends … in boats. Watch out for Sailor … this is one cheeky monkey.
Meet Charlie Piro, a year 5 student at Cowandilla Primary who sails for Brighton & Seacliff YC in South Australia. Charlie has many interests, school soccer, cycling, loves family holidays, playing video games and is crazy about sailing. Charlie enjoyed meeting new friends at the 2017 Gill Australian & Open Opti Championships and the coaching with Fernando and Alex.
Sailing from Royal Qld YS, 10 year old Hugo Ralph loves sailing and outdoor activities such as camping and boating. Hugo goes by the saying "train like you race and race like you train". Jade is 13 years old and was born in Sydney, Australia - for most of Jade’s life she has lived as an expatriate, currently living in Bangkok. Jade is in Yr 9 at Bangkok Patana School and likes art, drama, swimming and sailing – also plays the piano, bassoon and the guitar. Jade has been sailing for just over two years now and competed in last year’s Australian Nationals in the Intermediate fleet coming 6th overall and 1st female in the fleet. Jade’s club is the Royal Varuna YC the venue for the 2017 IODA World Championships ….look out for Jade around Largs Bay SC.
Meet Lizzie Shapland an 11 year old sailor from beautiful Kohimarama Yacht Club in Auckland, New Zealand. In 2015 Lizzie braved the extreme weather conditions of the 2015 Australian Nationals and enjoyed it so much that she will be competing again this year!
Meet Christopher Walsh ... a sailor from the Royal Varuna Yacht Club - venue for 2017 Opti World Championships. Chris is 10 years old has been sailing since he was 6 and he has competed in International regattas in Hong Kong, UK and this will be his second Australian Nationals. Meet one of the International sailors that will be competing in the 2017 Gill Australian & Open Optimist Championships – Walter Axel Wahlroos from Porvoo (located on South Coast of Finland, near the capital Helsinki). Walter is 13yrs old and a keen Opti sailor - sailing achievements include 2015 Finnish Nationals Jnr Champion, 2015 Nordic Team Racing Champion and 43rd at the Asian & Oceanian Championships in Sri Lanka. Walter likes to keep moving … skiing and Brazilian Jiujitsu amongst his hobbies.
Welcome Cooper & Samara Walshe … the first USA Opti sailors to register for the 2017 Gill Australian & Open Optimist Championships. From New York City, members of Edgartown YC, near Boston and students at Avenues School NYC, Cooper is in Yr 8 and one of the USA Development Team, in 2016 competing in the Netherlands, Scotland and Venice. Samara is in Yr 4 and is setting her sights on representing the USA by age 10 ..Go Samara! Largs Bay local Carter Baker is 9 years old and in year 4 at Largs Bay School.
He loves footy and soccer in winter and sailing in the summer.
Carter is a two time club champion at Largs Bay Sailing Club and will be coming into this third nationals this year in his opti.
Carter says he loves racing, but not to keen on training and prefers to be playing with his friends.
He can’t wait to show everyone his home club in January for the 2017 Gill Australian & Open Optimist Championships.

From Brighton & Seacliff YC in SA, Lachie is 11yrs old and in Year 5 at St Peter’s Woodlands, Glenelg where he also plays basketball - a big highlight being winning the Grand Final last season. Minecraft is also a big favourite but Lachie admits to driving mum (Tanya) crazy with anything RC (remote control) .. cars.. boats - & word is that its dad who is the secret RC fan. A special sailing moment was winning his 1st race in Green Fleet at the SA State Titles.
Meet Will - sailor of “The Force Awakens” from Mornington Yacht Club in Victoria. Will’s sailing highlight to date was being part of the VIODA team in 2015 that participated in the Qingdao Training Camp and Regatta in China, venue of the 2008 Olympic sailing events.. Will also enjoys sailing with his Dad on a keelboat ..and an Etchell. Now in Year 7 at Padua College, Will also keeps fit by cross country running and snow skiing (and Star Wars!). Will especially likes the laughs in the boat park with his sailing friends and specialises in ..annoying his twin sister both on and off the water.
Molly sails in "Hakuna Matata" from Royal Freshwater Bay YC, WA. Molly recently moved into Gold Fleet after a great result of 5th in Intermediate at the 2015 Nationals. Molly plays hockey, basketball & runs cross country in Yr 5 at her school. Cuddling her new puppy is a favourite thing to do and chocolate keeps her going.
Hammo .... a well known character from RQYS, a Yr 8 student at Cannon Hill Anglican College, Brisbane. Hamish, plays Rugby, working out at Cross Fit and is a Clash of Clans fiend … just ask his mum Kate ;) The 2014 Mornington Nationals was the event that hooked Hammo onto Opti sailing … taking out 1st Place in Intermediate after only sailing for a few months! Hamish finds sailing relaxing … but only when hiking out at top speed, he came 12th at the 2016 Australian Nationals and is one of the 10 AOST sailors competing in the IODA Asians in Sri Lanka in May …. Go Hammo!
Jonas sails in "Sharky" from BSYC, SA and in 2016 he will start at Sacred Heart in Yr7. Amongst Jonas's sailing highlights are coming 7th in Intermediate 2014 Nationals & 2nd around the wing mark in Open 2015 - Jonas managed to swipe up his "lucky red cap" in the 2015 Nationals while beating downwind. AFL, volleyball & surfing are also sports Jonas plays but he doesnt mind a game of handball and invites any Opti sailors to join him in a game.
Olivia is NSW's singing sailor..... and a year 5 student at Oxford Falls Grammar. Olivia loves swimming, muscial theatre and is a member of the Australian Girls Choir.
Olivia sail from Royal Prince Alfred YC and loves competing in "Blossom" in the Travellers Trophy 2 - 1st Overall, 1st 10yo girl and 1st girl ...... Go Olivia !!!!
