The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron has a long history of supporting junior sailing in many classes.  In recent years there has been an emphasis on the Optimist Class and it is pleasing to now host the 2017 Australian Optimist Championships. The Opti provides the opportunity to get involved in a global class that prepares young sailors for a life of competition, and comradery.

The Optimist class is a key part of a junior sailors journey, laying the foundations for whatever future class a sailor chooses.   For many it is not the medals that sailors will take home from this regatta that are important, but the memories, and the friends made.

RQYS has a very proud history of running world-class events, the flag poles around our Squadron rigging lawns commemorate the Finn Gold Cup in 1976, and since then we have hosted World and Australian Championships for dozens of classes. This year we welcome not just the Optimist, but the Oceania and Australian Championships for the Laser, 49erFX, 49er, Nacra 15, and BicTechno Windsufer, classes which, no doubt, will be sailed by sailors who graduate from the rigging lawn of this Australian Optimist Championships.

The Squadron looks forward to your attendance at our club, and hopes that the memories from your week with us stay long in the minds of Sailors and Parents alike.
