With over 260 sailors from nine countries, the 2017 Gill Australian and Open Optimist Championships held at Largs Bay Sailing Club in South Australia was a huge success. The strong international fleet of 33 sailors from Europe, Asia, the Pacific, New Zealand and America made this one of most competitive fleets seen in Australia and has really lifted the international profile of Optimist sailing in the region.  In the Open Fleet international sailors took the honours with Malaysian and Singapore taking out the first three places.

Australian & Open Optimist Nationals

The 2017 GILL Australian & Open International Optimimist Championship was a fantastic event with many International sailors coming to Australia to join our fleet for world class fleet racing experience.

The Optimist class is the largest pathway class in Australia and continues to grow due to its fantastic Club, State and National training and racing opportunities.

The Optimist Nationals create a fantastic holiday experience where children can enjoy their sailing with an extensive après sail entertainment in a festival atmosphere.  The next Nationals will be held in Queensland.

Learn to Sail - Tackers

Tackers is an introductory, fun, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12, delivered at recognised Tackers Clubs. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience and they don’t have to be a member of a club to participate. All the equipment, including the boats, is provided.

Upon completion of the Tackers program you can become a boat owner and join us as part of the Australian fleet.  There are many good quality second hand boats available on the OptiAUS Buy / Sell page.

Meet the SAILOR

AIODA is fortunate to have a fantastic member base from around Australia.  Each month we will introduce you to one of your fellow Opti sailors from around Australia.  We will aim to introduce you to sailors from all skill levels from around Australia.

Introducing Sailor Cowan, a 7yr old Green fleeter from Largs Bay SC in SA.  Sailor is in Year 2 at Largs Bay Primary where she’s a keen ball player competing in both soccer and football.  This photo was taken during the SA Youths where Sailor competed on her boat Squirto.    Sailor is aiming to be top 3 in Green Fleet and a big sailing highlight was beating big brother Murphy in a race.  Hobbies include watching Utube and playing with friends … in boats.   Watch out for Sailor … this is one cheeky monkey.

The Optimist has been a fantastic boat for our family. We are the proud owner of two of them and we simply love the community feel. It was a little daunting at our first regatta however it didn't take long and we have made so many friends and we love to travel interstate with the kids.

Thank you for the wonderful opportunity for my child to represent our country in the Optimist. What a fantastic reward for all their hard work!

My daughter has personally grown so much from her time learning to sail in the Optimist. She was only 7yo when she completed her first learn to sail course. The confidence and independence that sailing has given her is a gift that she has taken into other parts of her life. We love the girls in sailing initiatives as its the friendships made that keep her in the sport.
