Australian & Open Optimist Nationals

The 2014 Optimimist Australian & Open Championship was a fantastic event hosted by Mornington Yacht Club.  The following video captured the spirit of the event and friendships that are built between sailors.

The next Nationals will be held by Largs Bay Sailing Club in South Australia and we would encourage as many sailors to come to Largs and get involved in having a fantastic family holiday.

Learn to Sail - Tackers

Tackers is an introductory, fun, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12, delivered at recognised Tackers Clubs. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience and they don’t have to be a member of a club to participate. All the equipment, including the boats, is provided.

Upon completion of the Tackers program you can become a boat owner and join us as part of the Australian fleet.  There are many good quality second hand boats available on the OptiAUS Buy / Sell page.

Meet the SAILOR

AIODA is fortunate to have a fantastic member base from around Australia.  Each month we will introduce you to one of your fellow Opti sailors from around Australia.  We will aim to introduce you to sailors from all skill levels from around Australia.

Largs Bay local Carter Baker is 9 years old and in year 4 at Largs Bay School.

He loves footy and soccer in winter and sailing in the summer.

Carter is a two time club champion at Largs Bay Sailing Club and will be coming into this third nationals this year in his opti.

Carter says he loves racing, but not to keen on training and prefers to be playing with his friends.

He can’t wait to show everyone his home club in January for the 2017 Gill Australian & Open Optimist Championships.

Look out for Carter for some local tips.

The Optimist has been a fantastic boat for our family. We are the proud owner of two of them and we simply love the community feel. It was a little daunting at our first regatta however it didn't take long and we have made so many friends and we love to travel interstate with the kids.

Thank you for the wonderful opportunity for my child to represent our country in the Optimist. What a fantastic reward for all their hard work!

My daughter has personally grown so much from her time learning to sail in the Optimist. She was only 7yo when she completed her first learn to sail course. The confidence and independence that sailing has given her is a gift that she has taken into other parts of her life. We love the girls in sailing initiatives as its the friendships made that keep her in the sport.
