Australian & Open Optimist Nationals

The 2017 GILL Australian & Open International Optimimist Championship was a fantastic event with many International sailors coming to Australia to join our fleet for world class fleet racing experience.

The Optimist class is the largest pathway class in Australia and continues to grow due to its fantastic Club, State and National training and racing opportunities.

The Optimist Nationals create a fantastic holiday experience where children can enjoy their sailing with an extensive après sail entertainment in a festival atmosphere.  The next Nationals will be held in Queensland.

Learn to Sail - Tackers

Tackers

Tackers is an introductory, fun, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12, delivered at recognised Tackers Clubs. Kids don’t need to have any sailing experience and they don’t have to be a member of a club to participate. All the equipment, including the boats, is provided.

Upon completion of the Tackers program you can become a boat owner and join us as part of the Australian fleet.  There are many good quality second hand boats available on the OptiAUS Buy / Sell page.

Meet the SAILOR

AIODA is fortunate to have a fantastic member base from around Australia.  Each month we will introduce you to one of your fellow Opti sailors from around Australia.  We will aim to introduce you to sailors from all skill levels from around Australia.

Andrew Dempsey is 14yrs old and started sailing at the South of Perth YC within weeks of emigrating from UK.  Learning to sail allowed Andrew to make sailing friends before starting Yr9 at his new school.   Having swapped the Thames for the Swan River & the Indian Ocean - Andrew is on water in summer 6 days a week either sailing or rowing,  his second passion.   When on dry land he usually has his head  in a Kindle  - his third passion.

Ben Hinks is a Yr7 student who sails from Adelaide Sailing Club.  A sailing highlight has been being part of the winning team of the 2017 Optimist Nationals Teams Racing at the 2017 Nationals in South Australia.  Ben's other hobbies are soccer, cycling and flying his drone - but sailing is something he is crazy about and he'd love to represent Australia at the Olympics in a Laser Full rig.  Ben is one of the 10 AOST team members heading to Hong Kong for the 2017 Asian & Oceanian Championships.  Good luck Ben !

The Optimist has been a fantastic boat for our family. We are the proud owner of two of them and we simply love the community feel. It was a little daunting at our first regatta however it didn't take long and we have made so many friends and we love to travel interstate with the kids.

Thank you for the wonderful opportunity for my child to represent our country in the Optimist. What a fantastic reward for all their hard work!

My daughter has personally grown so much from her time learning to sail in the Optimist. She was only 7yo when she completed her first learn to sail course. The confidence and independence that sailing has given her is a gift that she has taken into other parts of her life. We love the girls in sailing initiatives as its the friendships made that keep her in the sport.
